For hardship does not spring from the soil,
    nor does trouble sprout from the ground.(A)
Yet man is born to trouble(B)
    as surely as sparks fly upward.

“But if I were you, I would appeal to God;
    I would lay my cause before him.(C)
He performs wonders(D) that cannot be fathomed,(E)
    miracles that cannot be counted.(F)
10 He provides rain for the earth;(G)
    he sends water on the countryside.(H)
11 The lowly he sets on high,(I)
    and those who mourn(J) are lifted(K) to safety.
12 He thwarts the plans(L) of the crafty,
    so that their hands achieve no success.(M)
